HASBROUCK HEIGHTS (Nov. 18, 2010) — Mary T. Rippicandidi (née Giaquinto), 97, a 30-year resident of Hasbrouck Heights and formerly of Wood-Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010. Before retiring, she was a cashier for ShopRite supermarket in Hasbrouck Heights. Previously, she owned Town Shoppe Luncheonette in Wood-Ridge. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church in Wood-Ridge. She was a member of the Leisure Club in Hasbrouck Heights.

Predeceased by her husband Frank Rippicandidi, her daughter Concetta Kostoplis, her sisters Teresa Giaquinto and Marge Crone. Survived by her daughters Constance Pendley of Secaucus and Jo Ann Pinto of Succasunna, her son Joseph Rippicandidi of Orlando, Fla., her nine grandchildren, her 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A Mass was said at Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church in Wood-Ridge with burial following at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington. Arrangements by Costa Memorial Home in Hasbrouck Heights.

LYNDHURST (Nov. 18, 2010) — Rose M. Schmitt, aka Rose Schindler, born in Warwick, N.Y., and longtime resident of Lyndhurst, died Nov. 3, 2010, after a long illness. Beloved wife of the late Robert F. Schmitt and “Bill” Schindler, famous midget race car driver. Devoted mother of Doris Lawmaster (Irving, Texas) and the late Robert Schindler. Dear sister of Eleanore Prakopcyk (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Theresa Comer (New York, N.Y.). She is predeceased by four sisters and seven brothers. Cherished grandmother of three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also survived by 11 nieces and nephews. Rose for many years was an active member and former president of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Lyndhurst, the GFWC Woman’s Club of Rutherford, sat on the board of the NJ State Federation of Women’s Clubs GFWC and was a dedicated volunteer for the American Red Cross. A talented and accomplished seamstress, Rose designed and sewed gowns as well as clothing for dolls. These dolls were later given to needy children, much to their delight. She also worked for Ma Wooby’s Inn in New Jersey as a talented mixologist.

RUTHERFORD (Nov. 18, 2010) — John J. Corless, 81, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010. He was the son of the late Michael and Marie Corless. John was a graduate of the SUNY at Farmingdale, N.Y., where he earned his bachelors degree in horticulture. He was the co-owner of Caronia and Corless Flowers in New York City for 11 years. He subsequently spent the next 35 years in the film industry as a film director and was an active member of the Directors Guild of America. John was a longtime resident of New York City until he moved to Rutherford in 1992 where he made many close friends and acquaintances. He is survived by his friend and business partner of 55 years, Carl Caronia, a brother James Michael, sister-in-law Joan Corless, nieces Carolyn Corless and Gina Mills and nephews Michael and James II.

Arrangements by the Macagna-Diffily-Onorato Funeral Home, Rutherford. Private cremation. Interment at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton. John requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St. Alexandria, VA 22311.

ObituariesCHARLES ‘CHUCK’ MUELLER

LYNDHURST (Nov. 18, 2010) — Retired U.S. Marine Corp Lt. Colonel Charles Mueller, a 1948 graduate of Lyndhurst High School, passed away Oct. 8, 2010. He resided in Lake of the Woods, Va., with his loving wife Mary Mueller. Chuck entered the Marine Corp after high school. His service included serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his career he was awarded two Silver Stars, a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts along with various other medals. He was a member of “The Chosen Few” for the battle at the Chosen Reservoir in Korea. Upon his return from Korea he became a commissioned officer. He served two tours in Vietnam, his second as a battalion commander, Second Battalion, 7th Marines in 1968. Chuck retired from the Marine Corp in 1971. He is survived by his wife Mary, two daughters, Carey Renaud and her husband Jack and Carol Mueller, all of Lake of the Woods, Va., a brother Richard Mueller in Ft Lauderdale, Fla., and sister Phyllis Carini in Upland, Calif. Survivors also include five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edna Mueller of Lyndhurst and a son, U.S. Marine Corp Major Mike Mueller.

Military Funeral Honors were held at Quantico National Cemetery.

RUTHERFORD (Oct. 28, 2010) — Randall D. Mackie, “Scotty,” 80, of Rutherford, died Friday, October 22, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Scotty was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and lived in Rutherford for 60 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He served as commander for the Rutherford VFW Post #227. He was a volunteer firefighter, an award-winning EMT and received many citations for his life-saving efforts during his career. Scotty was employed by Hoffman LaRoche in Nutley for 25 years as a material handler specialist and retired in 1994. He also was past president of the Roche Retiree Club and past president of the HLR Ski Club. He was a prolific actor and vocalist for the Roche Players, having lead or supporting roles in many plays, such as “South Pacific,” “42nd Street,” “Guys & Dolls,” “Brigadoon” and “Carousel,” to name a few. He also did voiceover work for Disney.

Born in Jersey City, she lived in North Arlington since 1964.  She worked as an assembler for the Western Electric Company, Kearny, for 35 years before retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Queen of Peace Church Rosary Society, North Arlington, the Deborah Hospital Foundation, Kearny Chapter, and the Stanley Holmes Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America.  She is the beloved wife of the late William, the cherished mother of Helen J. Kazenmayer and her husband Charles, John Bratowicz Sr. and his wife Ellen, the adored grandmother of Maureen Costello, Karen Palatella, Susan Radziewicz, Kevin and Robert Kazenmayer, William and John Bratowicz Jr., and 11 great-grandchildren, and the loving sister of Theodore Dziedzic and the late Matthew and Stanley Dziedzic.

McGuinness was a professor of mathematics at St. Peter’s Preparatory School, Jersey City, where he received the “Legends of the Prep” award, Nov. 17, 2001. He earned his bachelor’s from St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, and his master’s from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a member and past commandant of the West Hudson Detachment of the Marine Corps League, a member and past commander of the United Veterans Organization, both of Kearny, the AIR-LAND-SEA Marine Corps League Detachment #710, Nutley and the Nutley Old Guard.

Interment was in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.

Murphy died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at the Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville. Born in New York City, she lived in Edgewater and Cliffside Park before moving to North Arlington in 1987. She worked as a bookkeeper for a pharmaceutical company in Englewood for 15 years before retiring in 1975.

She was a member of the Thursday Bowling League at Bowl-o-Drome in North Arlington. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael J. Murphy, the devoted mother of Caroline Organisciak, Mary Pellegrino and the late Jean Murphy, the cherished grandmother of Chester Organisciak and his wife Dawn, William Organisciak and his wife Denise, Michael Davison and his wife Jessica and loving great-grandmother of Mya, Kylie, Kody and Kaiden.

ObituariesMILTON VREELAND JOCHEM

JEFFERSON, N.Y. — Milton Vreeland Jochem, 89, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at his home in Jefferson, N.Y. He was born April 16, 1921, in East Rutherford, the son of Louis and Ruth (Dabinet) Jochem. He married the late Althea (Young) Jochem on Aug. 21, 1939, in Ballston Spa, N.Y. A resident of the area for 58 years, Jochem was a World War II veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a member, and later an honorary member, of the Carpenters Local 370 for more than 63 years. He also enjoyed membership in the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion and VFW. Milton has four surviving children — daughters Betty Lou (Edward) Schwarz and Ruth Ann (Richard) Satterlee. Sons, Charles (Roxanne) Jochem and Jack (Debra) Jochem. Milton also has eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Althea (1995), a son William Jochem and a grandson Richard Schwarz.

Burial was in Jefferson Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson, N.Y.
