James J. Bilardello, 20, of East Rutherford, was arrested by the East Rutherford Police Department March 27 on 10 drug-related charges.

By Alexis Tarrazi
Senior Reporter

EAST RUTHERFORD (April 3, 2009, 2:35 p.m.) — An alleged drug dealer was arrested in East Rutherford after leading a police lieutenant on a foot race through the borough March 27.

The suspect, James J. Bilardello, 20, of East Rutherford, initially escaped arrest by scaling a 10-foot-tall fence at the rear of Triumph Court.

But, a second officer, Felix Raggozzino, found Bilardello hiding behind a garage at 11 Beech St. in Rutherford, where he was arrested.

Bilardello didn’t go quietly. According to police reports, the suspect punched, kicked and yelled profanities at the officers during the arrest.

He was charged with a laundry list of drug related charges.

“We basically took another drug dealer off the streets,” said East Rutherford Police Lt. Paul Cece, who initially saw Bilardello in the midst of an alleged illegal drug transaction, then pursued him on foot to Triumph Court. “I can honestly tell you neighbors were coming out and thanking us for arresting him.”

The arrest unfolded while Cece was on his way to McKenzie School.

“I drove by Herrick Street and saw three people in a car and it just didn’t look right,” Cece said. “As a police officer you get to know when things don’t look right … I went to investigate further and that’s when I saw the exchange.”

Cece, parked his marked police car behind the green Toyota with Bilardello inside, observed what he said appeared to be a drug transaction between Bilardello and another male in the car.

When Cece got out to investigate, Bilardello also got out of the Toyota and pushed Cece in the chest in order to flee on foot.

During the foot pursuit, Bilardello reportedly was throwing drugs out of his pockets.

When Bilardello escaped over the fence, a police perimeter was set up around the area by East Rutherford and Rutherford police. The Bergen County Police K-9 Unit was also called to assist.

As part of the investigation, Cece and officer Daniel Perry recovered a tin foil packet containing cocaine from the scene.

After obtaining a search warrant from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, detectives Todd Roth and Chris DeCarlo along with Lt. Phil Taormina searched Bilardello’s residence, and recovered an exorbitant amount of drug-related items, including: $1,225 cash, multiple bags of marijuana, cigar wrappings allegedly used for smoking marijuana, a marijuana plant leaf, tinfoil packages of cocaine, multiple bags with cocaine and marijuana residue, grow lamps, plant food, empty flower pots and a notebook which appeared to be used as a ledger for drug transactions.

“Based on the grow lamps, Miracle Gro and flower pots, it appears that at one point the defendant may have had a marijuana grow operation inside his room,” according to Roth’s report. “The large bags containing the cocaine residue also led me to believe that Mr. Bilardello was trafficking large amounts of narcotics.”

Bilardello was subsequently charged with aggravated assault on a police officer (fourth degree), two counts possession of cocaine (third degree), two counts of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute (fourth degree), obstruction, two counts of possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute (third degree) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bail was set at $27,000 with no 10 percent option by Judge George Savino.

Bilardello was released after posting $27,000 cash.

“The way it went down from start to finish, it was good police work because the guys (Roth, DeCarlo and Taromina), were here all night trying to get a search warrant from the judge,” Cece said. “They started at 3 p.m. and didn’t finish until 2 a.m. … It made coming to work a little bit special to get someone like that off the streets.”

This kid goes zooming around our neighborhood in his little red Mini Cooper at high speeds all time. I was always afraid he will kill a kid someday. Now I find out he is drug dealer? Good riddance. Get him off the streets and into jail where he belongs.

We don't want this in our neighborhoods and won't tolerate it.

His parents should be ashamed of themselves. Their kid is growing marijuana in his room and dealing cocaine and weed right outside their home and they had no clue? They let their kid speed around the neighborhood and don't care if their kid kills another kid?? Or don't care. Either way, they should be ashamed. They are disgraces of parenting. They should be locked up too.

Good job by the police.

Why is everyone forgetting the fact that he assaulted a police officer?

Open and shut case, as far as I'm concerned. Let the kid do his time, rehabilitate himself and hopefully come out of this a better person.

I know the family very well and I am concerned many have the wrong idea. The mother of James is the most loving, kind and caring person you would want to meet and know. I know for a fact that she had been doing her best and still is to help her young confused son. James is a kind person and got caught up in drugs as many of todays youth. I hope and pray all of the people around this family will have compassion as this boy grows into the good man that I know lives inside if him. He is not a violent or ruthless person in any way and needs support to change his life.

im really not that close to justin or james or his family. but either way i think its pretty low that all of you people take time from your day to make such horrible comments on anothers family. do you have any respect what so ever? your all acting like theres nothing wrong with your families. every family goes through a rough patch and all of you just take advantage of this and tear his family apart. another thing, anything can be written in a news paper, that doesnt make it true. im glad all of you take so much pride in discussing others flaws. i thought people told their children not to criticize others but you all do it with ease. your all pathetic, but its ok because your families are perfect.

First off, to all of you inconsiderate people who are bashing James and his family... you should know a little more about your Police officers that "serve and protect" East Rutherford. Lets first start off with that trusted police officer Paul Cece that all of you adore. You should ask him why he was laid off at his previous job and how many DUI's he has. Check this link out and scroll down to 1980's http://www.glenrockpolice.com/roster.htm.
Next, everyone should know how much the police officers of east rutherford harass the kids with nice cars. They continue to give multiple tickets for the same violation to the same kids countless times while almost every cop has the same parts on their personal car... such as tinted windows, exhaust, muffler, LEDs, etc. Sounds a little hypocritical to me. Maybe thats how all of the "high ranking" police officers get their triple digit salaries paid.

Now to bash you wonderful residents of East Rutherford. If you're going to leave false, derogatory statements about James and his family at least leave your name. To the person that said James father is a lawyer, its understandable that you're jealous of the billardellos successful food business. Yeah, that does mean he is not a lawyer.

Honestly, I dont have anything else to say but feel free to post your name with a comment and I can get back to you.
